Lead-Safe Contractor
As of April 22, 2010, new rules go into effect regarding work that disturbs lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978. Until 1978 many paints contained lead.
Ordinary renovation and maintenance activities in buildings built before 1978 can create dust that contains lead. Lead paint dust can be dangerous, and it doesn't take a lot of dust to cause harm to children and adults. Children who ingest even small amounts of lead dust can develop brain damage, behavior or learning problems, and have a high probability of delinquency. Adults who inhale dust from lead-based paint can have a higher risk of Alzheimer's disease, stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.
Contractors are required to be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. These work practices protect residents from the dust that may contain lead by:
- containing work areas (to limit any potential exposure to residents)
- minimizing the dust
- leaving the work area clean
Southland Insulators and its employees completed a program at New River Center for Energy Research & Training and are certified by the E.P.A. to perform these lead-safe work practices.
When you decide to have sidewall work done and your home was built prior to 1978, we will provide you with information that explains basic facts about lead and lead safety. When these procedures are followed, you can be confident that your health is not at risk.

Southland President Meets With Obama
December 16, 2009 - The founder of Southland Insulators, located in Manassas, Virginia, was recently invited to collaborate with President Obama and other energy experts to share ideas on job creation and ways to save energy in the United States.
On December 15, Gerald R. Palmer joined four other D.C.-area energy experts and President Obama to discuss the status of unemployment in the construction industry and the 80 million under-insulated homes in the United States. During the 20-minute meeting, the panel discussed a variety of topics, including the need for installer training and certification.
Palmer volunteered that since insulation is not viewed as a "sexy" product, homeowners are not often compelled to invest in it. President Obama made this comment part of his closing speech to the press, insisting that insulation is sexy. Obama stated, "Here's what's sexy about it - saving money."
"As a homeowner and local business owner, I take Southland's commitment to both our local community and the community at large very seriously. It is our obligation to share our knowledge and experience to help in any way we can. I am honored to participate in this panel and share my expertise to help our country's economy and the environment."
Extreme Home Makeover Partner
In 2008, Southland Insulators was proud to be part of Extreme Makeover Home Edition in conjunction with other D.C. Metro contractors including Classic Homes of Maryland. With hard work and dedication from our managers and installer teams, we were able to bring a quality and safe home to a needy family.
Anniversary Celebration
In July 2006, Southland Insulators celebrated 20 years in business. Growing to the largest independent insulation contractor in three states (Virginia, Maryland and Delaware), we spent the day at Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia with over 475 of our employees and their families. Seven businesses brought people from all over the Mid-Atlantic area.
